RIGHTEOUS FUR FASHION SHOW: A NUTRIA-PALOOZA!
Summary : Nutria-inspired fashion extravaganza and ball.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 8 8 p.m. AllWays Lounge (2240 St. Claude Ave.). An evening of performances and fashion inspired by the notorious nutria, a rodent imported from South America in the 1930s as a source of pelts. Escaping into the wild, the swamp rats, exhibiting a ravenous appetite for wetlands vegetation, became a serious menace to coastal preservation. Although a Coastwide Nutria Control Program pays trappers a bounty of $5 for each nutria tail collected, most of the meat and fur goes to waste. Hence the idea of a runway fashion show with models sporting designer creations made from “guilt-free” nutria fur. A ball immediately following the show will have music by Swamp Pop DJ Minor Strachan and revels by the Mystic Herd of Nutria, an ensemble of drummers and dancers with a flair for the Carnivalesque. Admission is $10 at the door or $15 for reserved tables and VIP seating (contact Cree McCree: creemccree@gmail.com, 504-269-3982). A portion of the proceeds will go to the Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary Foundation’s coastal restoration efforts. For photos and project info, visit the Righteous Fur website.
